Cinque Terre: Best Places to Stay, Eat, and Explore (Full Travel Tips)

Visiting the Cinque Terre is like stepping into a dream between turquoise waters and colorful alleyways. These five villages perched on the cliffs of Liguria, Italy, completely stole our hearts. Today, we’re sharing our favorite villages in order of preference, along with the best places to stay, eat, and make the most of your trip.

The Cinque Terre: Five Unique Villages Between Cliffs and Sea

The Cinque Terre are five unique villages clinging to rocky cliffs and facing the sea. While they may look similar in photos, each village has its own distinct character, atmosphere, and vibrant colors.
Here’s a small guide to help you better understand the vibe of each village and decide where to go based on your travel style.

| WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR TIME IN THE CINQUE TERRE

If there’s one piece of advice we can give you, it’s this: take your time. Wander through flower-filled alleyways, dive into the charming marinas, savor a glass of local white wine at sunset — this is the true essence of Italian living.

Plan at least three days to visit the Cinque Terre at a relaxed pace. One day simply isn’t enough to truly appreciate the beauty of each village. It would be a real shame to rush through them, especially if you want to hike, explore, and soak up the atmosphere.

To fully experience the magic of the Cinque Terre, stay a few days. Stroll the quaint streets, swim in the authentic little marinas, sit on the rocks to admire the sunset, and enjoy a glass of excellent local white wine on a panoramic terrace.

Our Cinque Terre Ranking: Favorites and Best Addresses

| MANAROLA, THE VIBRANT AND ROMANTIC GEM

It’s no surprise that Manarola is our favorite village. Although very popular and certainly one of the most visited villages in the Cinque Terre, it remains incredibly authentic and full of charm!

Highlights not to miss:

  • The breathtaking view from the Bonfiglio Trail.
On the other side of the path leading to Corniglia (currently closed), you’ll find a beautiful turquoise cove at Punta Bonfiglio — a perfect spot for a swim.
It’s much quieter than the main marina, and the crystal-clear waters are simply stunning (a bit chilly for me, but I couldn’t resist a dip!).

  • A secret, hidden cove ideal for a peaceful swim away from the crowds.

  • A magical sunset at Nessun Dorma, the perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo platter with spectacular sea views.

  • Wine tasting, as Manarola is famous for its sweet wine, Sciacchetrà.
Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the Apennine Mountains shielding the region from northern winds, the vines thrive under the sun all year round, creating perfect conditions for exquisite wine production.

→ Where to Eat in Manarola

  • Nessun Dorma is the perfect spot for a dreamy aperitivo at sunset.
This slightly elevated restaurant offers breathtaking views over Manarola — a real favorite!
Expect to pay around €20 for the “Aperitivo Maritimo” platter, featuring a delicious mix of cold cuts, cheeses, and two glasses of Monterosso white wine. A true feast for the eyes and the palate!

  • Il Porticciolo, known for its seafood pasta and excellent squid ink pasta.

  • Trattoria dal Billy, for a taste of authentic, flavorful local cuisine.

  • Restaurant Marina Piccola, a cozy spot close to the waterfront.

→ Where to Grab a Drink or Ice Cream

A relaxing break on a terrace café at sunset is a must. For a delicious artisanal gelato, head to Gelateria Cinque Terre.

| VERNAZZA, TYPICAL ITALIAN CHARM

Vernazza is another one of our absolute favorites. With its fishing boats, pastel-colored facades, laundry strung across narrow streets, Italian “mamas” at the windows, and a lively village atmosphere — this is the Italy we love!

The village reminds us a lot of the charming city of Nice in the south of France. Here, there are no cars — only cobblestone alleyways, secret staircases, and the constant lure of the sea. Pure bliss!

Ranked among the most beautiful villages in Italy, Vernazza offers the perfect blend of authenticity, natural beauty, and vibrant local life. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be enchanted by:

  • Its adorable little fishing port where swimming is possible.
The beach in Vernazza may be small, but it has everything you could wish for: fine sand, crystal-clear waters, and a cheerful atmosphere.
For a quieter experience, follow the rocks to the right of the harbor — you’ll find hidden spots perfect for laying down your towel and diving into the sea.

  • Its lively main square, lined with cafés and terraces.

  • Its steep, narrow streets, filled with the scent of freshly washed laundry.
Every corner is a photo opportunity: colorful shutters, artisan boutiques, hidden frescoes… We absolutely loved it!
Tip: Get lost on purpose in the maze of alleyways for the most authentic experience.

  • Its breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, like the spectacular viewpoint when hiking toward Monterosso or the Azure Trail leading to Corniglia.

  • Its ancient castle overlooking Vernazza.
Castello Doria is one of the oldest fortresses in the region. Climb up to the tower for stunning panoramic views over the deep blue sea and the village. Entry costs around €2.
    Highly recommended at sunset!

  • The Vernazza – Monterosso Trail

This is the most famous and probably the most beautiful trail in the Cinque Terre! Leaving the village, the path winds uphill through the hills, offering spectacular views of Vernazza, its red rooftops, and its turquoise marina.
After about 20–30 minutes of climbing, you’ll reach the iconic viewpoint featured on countless postcards.

Good to know:

  • Difficulty: Accessible with good hiking shoes (it’s a steep climb!).

  • Duration: About 30 minutes to the viewpoint.

  • Price: Paid trail, approximately €7.50 per person if you don’t have the Cinque Terre Card.

  • Tip: Start early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds!

  • The Vernazza – Corniglia Trail

Less crowded than the Monterosso trail, this path also offers magical views of the coastline. Winding through terraced vineyards and overlooking the shimmering sea, it’s a true timeless escape.

Good to know:

  • Difficulty: Moderate, with a few staircases.

  • Duration: About 1.5 hours to reach Corniglia.

  • Tip: Bring plenty of water — it often gets very hot along the trail!

→ Where to Stay in Vernazza

We loved staying at Cadé Ventu, perched high above the village with free parking — a real hidden gem! ➡️ More accommodation options here

→ Where to Eat in Vernazza

  • Don’t miss the delicious focaccias at Batti Battì.

  • Enjoy a memorable dinner with a sea view at Belforte restaurant.

  • Treat yourself to a handcrafted gelato at Amore Mio — simply irresistible!

| RIOMAGGIORE, THE PERFECT POSTCARD

Riomaggiore was the first village we visited during our Cinque Terre trip — and although we initially overlooked it, it quickly revealed its true charm once we found the marina!

After seeing many postcard images of Riomaggiore, we realized we had completely missed the beautiful marina. The stairs leading down to it are just after exiting the tunnel, but with our eyes fixed upwards towards the colorful windows of the village, we completely missed it!

→ Our tip: When you arrive by train, you need to walk through a long tunnel to reach the most beautiful part of the village. Unlike most of the Cinque Terre villages, Riomaggiore slopes upward, meaning you arrive directly by the sea. You’ll need to climb uphill to fully discover the village — but make sure you head down to the marina, as the view of the colorful houses stacked against the cliffside is absolutely stunning, especially at sunset.
Some people swim in the small marina, while others (like us) just relax on the rocks for a few hours to enjoy the idyllic setting.

→ Where to Stay in Riomaggiore

We loved this apartment with a beautiful terrace offering stunning views over the village. ➡️ Check out more accommodation options here

→ Where to Eat in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore might just be the most affordable village in the Cinque Terre: a plate of pasta for €5 and a coffee for €1!

  • Grab a tasty pizza at La Lampara or Pizzeria Krepis.

  • Try the famous Fritto Misto (fried seafood in a paper cone) from Il Pescato Cucinato — perfect for a quick, delicious takeaway.

For a sweet or coffee break:

  • Take the coastal path toward Manarola and stop at the charming Bar & Vinci A piè de Mà café with a panoramic view.

  • Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Giammi Caffè.

  • Or savor the delicious Nocciolata spread from Rigoni di Asiago at Bar’O Netto.

In the evening: Head to Fuori Rotta, a cozy wine bar with a beautiful view over the village rooftops — the perfect spot to unwind!

| CORNIGLIA, THE AUTHENTIC HILLSIDE VILLAGE

After visiting Riomaggiore, Corniglia felt even more authentic and traditional. Unlike the other Cinque Terre villages, Corniglia has no direct access to the sea — but that doesn’t make it any less popular!

The train station sits at sea level, which means that upon arrival, you’ll have to climb more than 350 steps to reach the village. Perched on a hillside and surrounded by vineyards, Corniglia has no beach — but that’s part of its charm!

What we loved here were the narrow alleyways leading to hidden corners, the flower-filled patios perfect for lunch, a coffee, or a refreshing gelato. It felt a bit like playing hide and seek through the village! Near the church, the view over the colorful houses is stunning. From Corniglia, you can also pick up the coastal trail leading to Vernazza — a beautiful hike!

→ Where to Stay in Corniglia

Stay in this little gem: a breathtaking apartment with panoramic views over the village and the Ligurian Sea! Welcome to L’Agave Cinque Terre, a clifftop, air-conditioned apartment with an incredible terrace view. ➡️ More accommodation options available here

→ Where to Eat in Corniglia

  • Enjoy a delicious breakfast or brunch at A’ Caneva or Bar Conchiglia.

  • Stop at KMO for a cozy bite.

  • Relax with a coffee and panoramic views at Terza Terra Di Cadario Alison (Via Fieschi, 215), overlooking the cliffs.

  • For a great gelato, don’t miss Un Mare di Yogurt di Maddalena (72 Via Fieschi).

| MONTEROSSO AL MARE, THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY SEASIDE RESORT

Monterosso is often loved for its large sandy beach, but for us, the charm didn’t quite work its magic. It’s probably the village offering the most services, accommodations, and restaurants due to its size (around 1,500 inhabitants) and location.
However, in our opinion, it’s also the one with the least traditional charm! Sure, Monterosso is the oldest village of the Cinque Terre, but it’s also the only one with a wide, fine sandy beach.

Another thing that sets it apart: it’s not perched on a rocky promontory, unlike the other villages. Monterosso is split by a large rock: on one side, you’ll find the beaches; on the other, the historic old town. The beach is vast, often crowded, and largely privatized. For €20–25, you can rent a sun lounger and umbrella on the sand.

Our tip: Walk towards Hotel Porto Roca to find quieter turquoise coves where you can swim and sunbathe on the rocks. Monterosso is a perfect base if you’re looking for easy beach access and want to explore the other villages.

If you’re not in the mood for swimming, stroll through the charming old town, visit the Capuchin Monastery (from where you can see the other four Cinque Terre villages) or walk to the Aurora Tower for stunning panoramic views.vThe historic center is pretty, with wider alleyways than the other villages.vWe even brought home some delicious homemade pesto — verde, rosso, and truffle-flavored — from the popular shop Baico on Via Roma.

→ Where to Stay in Monterosso al Mare

Stay at Hotel Porto Roca, the only 4-star hotel in the village with a swimming pool, or at Hotel Albergo Degli Amici, located in the old town.
This small hotel features a lovely rooftop garden overlooking the Ligurian Sea ➡️ More accommodation options available here

→ Where to Eat in Monterosso al Mare

  • For a romantic dinner with a view, try the terrace at Hotel Porto Roca or Restaurant Ancora della Tortuga.

  • For smaller budgets:

    • Cantina del Pescatore, offering fresh, affordable dishes.

    • Il Fornaio for a great pizza.

  • Miky Ristorante is famous for its seafood risotto, cooked in a pot and sealed under a crust — a must-try (104 Lungomare Fegina).

  • Tip: Spend an evening at a local wine bar, sample three different Cinque Terre wines, and enjoy regional small bites — a wonderful way to discover the wine-making traditions of the area!
