| WHY YOU HAVE TO VISIT THE CINQUE TERRE

Things to Do in the Cinque Terre

Imagine a series of colorful villages clinging to dramatic cliffs, overlooking a turquoise sea where time seems to stand still. Each village has its own unique charm and character:

  • Monterosso al Mare

The largest of the five villages, Monterosso al Mare boasts a sandy beach, a wide variety of shops, accommodations, and seaside restaurants.

  • Vernazza

Often considered the most beautiful village, Vernazza features a picturesque harbor and charming, narrow streets.

  • Corniglia

The least known of the five, Corniglia sits perched atop a cliff, offering breathtaking panoramic sea views.

  • Manarola

Famous for its colorful houses and terraced vineyards, Manarola is arguably the most iconic village of the Cinque Terre.

  • Riomaggiore

The liveliest village, Riomaggiore is known for its delicious seafood restaurants and unforgettable sunsets. You’ll love the scenic harbor views

→ Authentic Ligurian Experiences

Beyond the stunning scenery, the Cinque Terre offers an authentic dive into Ligurian culture:

  • Learn to make and taste fresh pesto

  • Sample local wines in the terraced vineyards

  • Hike scenic trails between the villages, with breathtaking views of the sea and mountains

  • Take a boat tour to explore the coast from the water

| MAP AND LOCATION OF THE CINQUTE TERRE VILLAGES

The Cinque Terre is located in Liguria, in northwestern Italy, between Genoa (Genova) and La Spezia. The region is near the French border, with well-known cities like Genoa and San Remo nearby. The five iconic villages — Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, stretch along roughly 10 kilometers of scenic coastline. They are easily accessible by train, boat, or on foot.

Each village is connected by the regional train line that runs along the coast, offering short and picturesque rides between the villages. For those who love walking, hiking trails like the famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) allow you to travel between the villages on foot, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Our tip: Take your time exploring these charming villages. At least three days is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and fully enjoying la Dolce Vita.

Here’s a map to help you better visualize their locations.

| HOW TO GET TO THE CINQUE TERRE

The Cinque Terre is known for its breathtaking landscapes and charming coastal villages. To make the most of your visit, choosing the right mode of transportation is essential.

  • By Train from Genoa or La Spezia

Taking the train is by far the easiest and most convenient way to explore the Cinque Terre. The regional rail line connects Genoa (Genova) and La Spezia, with stops in each of the five villages.

  • Frequency: Trains run every 10 to 20 minutes from 5:00 AM to midnight from La Spezia. Note: delays are common, both on the outbound and return journeys!

  • Tickets: Purchase your tickets in advance on TrenItalia or Trainline to avoid long queues. These platforms also allow you to check real-time train schedules and make easy online bookings.

  • Ticket machines and counters are available at all train stations.

  • The Cinque Terre Card – Unlimited Travel Pass

For a hassle-free experience, consider getting the Cinque Terre Card, which allows unlimited travel and access to several services:

  • Unlimited train rides between Levanto and La Spezia

  • Local bus transportation within the villages

  • Access to hiking trails (including the Sentiero Azzurro)

  • Free Wi-Fi in train stations

  • Free entry to the La Spezia museum

  • Access to public restrooms

This pass is ideal for travelers who want to hike, move between villages freely, and maximize their time in the region.

⚠️ Beware: Trains are often overcrowded during peak hours, especially around midday. Also, don’t forget to validate (stamp) your train ticket before boarding — failure to do so can result in a hefty fine, and ticket inspectors are quite strict in this region.

  • Can You Visit the Cinque Terre by Car? Parking and Driving Tips

Driving in the Cinque Terre is strongly discouraged. Car access is highly restricted within the villages, except for some limited areas in Monterosso al Mare. Narrow roads, ZTL zones (limited traffic areas), and very limited parking make it impractical to explore the villages by car.

If you’re arriving from France by car, consider carpooling to save on fuel and toll costs! Travel time:

  • From Monaco: about 3.5 hours

  • From Genoa (Genova): around 2.5 hours

→ Where to Park in La Spezia (Best Parking Options)

La Spezia is an excellent base for visiting the Cinque Terre by train. If you’re driving, here are some recommended parking lots:

  • Palaspezia Parking : Free, with a free shuttle bus to the city center, just 10 minutes’ walk from the train station.

  • Gare Parking (Via Fiume) :  €1.50 per hour (€1.00 at night), open 24/7.

  • Piazza d’Armi Parking : Free, but often full during summer months.

We personally parked in one of the small streets near La Spezia train station. Back in 2016, it cost around €5 to €7 per day. Prices may have increased in 2025, and parking fills up fast arrive early to secure a spot!

Parking in Levanto: Another Great Base for the Cinque Terre

Levanto is another excellent alternative for travelers arriving by car, offering several convenient parking options:

  • Train Station Parking (Parcheggio Stazione FS) : €2 per hour, €15 per day

  • Via XXV Aprile Parking : €2 per hour, €24 for 24 hours

From Levanto, you can easily take the regional train that connects all five Cinque Terre villages.

  • Visiting the Cinque Terre by Tuk Tuk (from Milan)

Looking for a unique way to reach the Cinque Terre? The Milan-based company La Gira offers a fun and offbeat option: self-drive convertible tuk-tuks for a road trip adventure through Italy, including the Cinque Terre.

⚠️ Important to know:

  • This option is very expensive for just a short visit.

  • It’s only recommended if you’re doing a full tuk-tuk road trip across Italy and passing through the Cinque Terre, with plans to return to Milan.

  • The drive is long and tiring, but it’s certainly one of the most original ways to explore the region!

  • Closest Airports to the Cinque Terre: Genoa and Pisa

The two nearest airports to the Cinque Terre are:

→ Genoa Airport (Cristoforo Colombo GOA)

  • Located about 1.5 hours by train from La Spezia.

  • Take the shuttle bus to Genova Piazza Principe (main train station), then follow the train instructions to reach the Cinque Terre.

→ Pisa Airport (Galileo Galilei PSA)

  • Also around 1.5 hours by train from La Spezia.

  • Direct trains from Pisa to the Cinque Terre make this a convenient and popular option.

From either airport, the train is the most efficient and scenic way to reach the Cinque Terre. Car rental is possible but not recommended due to parking limitations and restricted access in the villages.

  • Cinque Terre by Boat: Ferry Connections and Scenic Cruises

→ Ferry Services in the Cinque Terre

Public ferries offer flexible options such as half-day or full-day tickets, allowing you to:

  • Hop on and off at each village (except Corniglia, which doesn’t have a port)

  • Combine train and ferry for a complete and budget-friendly itinerary

  • Extend your trip to Portovenere, a stunning coastal town just south of the Cinque Terre

Note: Portovenere is only accessible by boat or car. To return from there, take the ferry or catch a train from nearby La Spezia.

  • Cruises and Boat Tours in the Cinque Terre

Below you’ll find a selection of Cinque Terre boat excursions for every preference and budget. Tours depart from Portovenere, Levanto, and La Spezia, just choose the departure point that works best for your itinerary.

| GETTING AROUND THE CINQUE TERRE : TRAIN, FERRY & SCENIC ROUTES

By combining different modes of transport, you can fully enjoy the diversity and beauty of the Cinque Terre, whether you’re admiring the villages from the sea, hiking along coastal trails, or exploring by scooter.

  • Regional Train: The Cinque Terre Express

The Cinque Terre Express is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between the five villages. Operating from mid-March to early November, trains run every 15 to 20 minutes between La Spezia and Levanto, stopping in all five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso.

  • Travel time: Just 4 to 6 minutes between each village.

  • Ticket prices vary by season:

    • Low season: €5 for adults / €2.50 for children

    • Mid-season: €8 for adults / €4 for children

    • High season: €10 for adults / €5 for children

For unlimited travel, consider purchasing the Cinque Terre Card, which includes:

  • Unlimited train rides

  • Access to paid hiking trails

  • Additional benefits like Wi-Fi, bus access, and museum entry

→ Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: Don’t forget to validate your train ticket before boarding to avoid fines.

  • Ferries: Timetables and Stops

Exploring the Cinque Terre by boat or ferry is a memorable way to admire the colorful villages from the water, especially from April to October.

From late March to early November, boats operate between La Spezia, Levanto, Porto Venere, and four of the five villages (⚠️ Corniglia does not have sea access). During peak season, departures are frequent, with stops at:

  • Monterosso al Mare

  • Vernazza

  • Manarola

  • Riomaggiore

Schedules vary based on season and weather conditions, so be sure to check real-time ferry timetables on the Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti official website.

Tickets can be purchased on-site or online, with prices depending on the chosen route and itinerary.

Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: For a well-rounded day trip, consider combining ferry and train travel to enjoy the Cinque Terre from both land and sea.

  • Exploring the Cinque Terre by Scooter or Tuk-Tuk: Options & Tips

For adventurous travelers looking for more freedom and flexibility, renting a scooter might seem like a fun option to explore the surroundings of the Cinque Terre. However, be aware: winding roads, limited access, and very restricted parking in the villages can make this choice more challenging than expected.

Some companies, like La Gira, even offer convertible tuk-tuks for a unique road trip experience across Italy. While original, this option is quite expensive and more suitable for a longer Italian adventure than a short visit to the Cinque Terre.

You can rent scooters from agencies such as Vesparun in La Spezia, which allows you to ride along panoramic coastal roads. However, access to the villages by scooter is limited due to:

  • Narrow, steep roads

  • Strict pedestrian-only zones (ZTL)

  • Very few designated parking spots

→  Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: If you choose this option, stick to riding between the villages or nearby areas, and always respect local traffic regulations.

  • Hiking Trails in the Cinque Terre: Sentiero Azzurro & Via dell’Amore

If you’re a hiking enthusiast, the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is a must-do. This iconic 12 km coastal path connects all five Cinque Terre villages from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, offering breathtaking views over the Ligurian Sea. One of the most scenic stretches is the section between Corniglia and Vernazza, which passes through terraced vineyards and olive groves.

The Reopening of Via dell’Amore

A highlight of the Sentiero Azzurro is the Via dell’Amore, a paved cliffside path of about 1 km linking Riomaggiore and Manarola. After being closed for 12 years due to a landslide, this romantic trail officially reopened in August 2024.

⚠️ Entry is now regulated to protect the site:

  • A €10 supplement is required in addition to the Cinque Terre Card

  • Access is limited to 10 people every 15 minutes

Be sure to check trail conditions before your trip, as closures may still occur due to weather or maintenance. For detailed trail maps and updates, visit the Cinque Terre National Park website.

Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Start early in the morning, especially in summer, to beat the heat and the crowds!

Check updated trail maps and closures on the Cinque Terre Park official website.

| WHERE TO STAY IN THE CINQ TERRE : TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS

In the Cinque Terre, most accommodations are Bed & Breakfasts or guesthouses, rather than large hotels. If you’re specifically looking for a hotel, Monterosso al Mare is your best bet, it’s the largest of the five villages and offers a wider range of lodging options.

It’s difficult to recommend just one place, as there are so many charming stays available. I personally use Booking.com for my searches, and you can definitely find some hidden gems there.

Prices vary depending on:

  • Time of year (expect higher rates in peak season: May to October)

  • Room location and village views

  • Whether breakfast is included

  • Available services and amenities

Note on decor: While many places are cozy and authentic, don’t be surprised if some Bed & Breakfasts feature more traditional or outdated decor. This is quite common in Liguria and throughout many small Italian villages, it’s part of their charm!

  • Accessibility Tips: Choose Wisely Based on Luggage and Location

Keep in mind that most Cinque Terre villages are hilly, with narrow streets, stairs, and steep alleys. If you’re carrying heavy luggage, this can be a challenge.

Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: Contact your accommodation beforehand to ask about the distance from the train station and how accessible it is. It will save you some effort and surprises!

  • Facilities in the Villages

Each village has at least a small grocery store (Coop) where you can buy essentials like fruit, vegetables, and water.

You’ll also find a variety of restaurants and trattorias, perfect for quick and local bites:

  • Focaccia and pizza

  • Fritto misto :  the classic paper cone of fried seafood like anchovies, calamari, and shrimp

  • Should You Book Accommodation in Advance?

Yes, absolutely! If you’re traveling between May and October, book early. The villages are small and charming stays fill up quickly.

For the most authentic experience, we recommend staying directly in one of the five villages, rather than in La Spezia or Levanto. You’ll soak in the atmosphere more fully, especially in the mornings and evenings when the crowds have left.

| BEST TIME TO VISIT THE CINQUE TERRE

The best time to visit the Cinque Terre is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, and the villages are less crowded, making it perfect for hiking and sightseeing.

Summer (July and August) is considered high season, expect large crowds and higher prices. If you’re planning to swim, aim for late May onwards, as the sea may still be too chilly in early spring.

Travel Tips:

  • Avoid July and August if possible, due to the intense heat and peak tourist numbers.

  • Start early in the morning to hike the trails and visit the villages before the crowds arrive.

  • In low season (November to March), it’s much quieter and more peaceful, ideal for travelers seeking solitude. However, keep in mind:

    • Some hiking trails may close due to weather or maintenance.

    • Check with the local tourist office before setting out, especially if there has been rain.

| HOW TO AVOID THE CROWDS IN THE CINQUE TERRE

Is it really possible to escape the crowds in the Cinque Terre? It’s challenging, but not impossible!

Most visitors stick to the main streets, so if you explore the side alleys and upper parts of the villages, you’ll find peaceful corners and gorgeous scenery.

Take the less-traveled paths around the villages to enjoy:

  • Breathtaking views over olive groves, lemon trees, and cacti

  • Authentic local charm and fewer tourists

  • A slower, more peaceful rhythm, just what la dolce vita is all about

Mademoiselle Voyage Tip: Go off the beaten path, sometimes all it takes is a short detour to feel like you’ve stepped into a hidden gem.

| SWIMMING IN THE CINQUE TERRE: BEST BEACHES & TIPS

Where to swim in the Cinque Terre? That’s one of the most frequently asked questions from visitors. Since the villages are built on rocky promontories, there are very few sandy beaches. However, the Cinque Terre offers a variety of swimming spots, from sandy shores to rocky coves perfect for a refreshing dip.

Here are some of the top places to swim:

  • Top Swimming Spots in the Cinque Terre

→ Monterosso al Mare: Fegina Beach

The largest and only sandy beach in the Cinque Terre, recognizable by its iconic orange umbrellas and lively atmosphere.

  • Family-friendly, with calm waters and easy access.
  • Umbrella and chair rentals available.

→ Vernazza

This picturesque village has two small beaches:

  • A tiny sandy beach near the harbor

  • A hidden rocky cove, accessible via a tunnel carved into the cliffside

→ Manarola

No sand here, but the flat rocks by the harbor make a scenic spot for swimming. Head past the Nessun Dorma restaurant and continue toward the cove with views of the colorful village.

→ Riomaggiore

You’ll find a pebble beach to the east of the village, accessible via a narrow path along the cliff. The waters here can be rough, swim with caution.

→ Corniglia

A steep path from the main square leads down to the sea.
Note: Access is via rocks and uneven terrain, not recommended for families or those with mobility issues. Be prepared to climb back up a lot of steps!

→ Levanto (just outside the Cinque Terre)

A spacious sandy beach with full facilities. Great for families, with more space and fewer stairs than the Cinque Terre villages.

Other Nearby Beaches Worth Exploring

  • Framura (Porto Pidocchio) : A small, quiet beach

  • Bonassola : Popular and lively, similar in style to Monterosso and Levanto

  • Guvano : A secluded cove once known for nudist bathing (note: check accessibility and local restrictions)

Tips for Swimming in the Cinque Terre with Kids

To enjoy a family beach day in the Cinque Terre, keep these tips in mind:

  • Equipment: Bring water shoes to protect little feet from pebbles and rocks. Don’t forget sun protection, parasols can be rented at Monterosso’s Fegina Beach.
  • Safety: Some beaches are not supervised, so it’s essential to watch your children at all times and follow local safety rules.
  • Accessibility: Many areas are hilly with lots of stairs, a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller for toddlers.
  • Timing: To avoid crowds, go for a swim early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

By following these tips, you and your family can safely enjoy the stunning beaches and hidden coves of the Cinque Terre, a unique blend of Italian charm and coastal adventure.

| CAN YOU VISIT THE CINQUE TERRE IN ONE DAY ?

One of the most common questions we get is: “Can I visit the Cinque Terre in just one day?”

Technically, yes but it would be very rushed and honestly a missed opportunity. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days to truly enjoy the experience:

  • Explore the villages at a relaxed pace

  • Take in the stunning views

  • Swim in the Mediterranean

  • Hike the coastal trails

  • Savor local cuisine

You’ll thank yourself for slowing down and soaking in la dolce vita.

| WHICH CINQUE TERRE VILLAGE IS THE MOST AUTHENTIC ?

Corniglia is often considered the most authentic and preserved village. It’s the only one without direct access to the sea, which keeps tourist numbers low.
Stroll through its peaceful alleys, enjoy the views over terraced vineyards, and embrace the tranquility. By contrast, Manarola is likely the most photographed and visited, thanks to its popularity on social media.

| VISITING THE CINQUE TERRE WITH CHILDREN

Exploring the Cinque Terre as a family is an unforgettable experience but careful planning is essential, especially if you’re traveling with young children or a stroller. Below are a few helpful tips to help you plan the perfect family-friendly itinerary, taking into account the accessibility and layout of each village.

→ Village Accessibility:

  • Monterosso al Mare
This is by far the most family-friendly village. It’s relatively flat and offers the only sandy beach in the Cinque Terre ideal for kids to play and swim safely.

  • Manarola
Though hillier, Manarola has a small playground and picturesque alleys. However, strollers can be tricky here due to the steep slopes and stairs.

  • Vernazza
Vernazza’s narrow alleys and many staircases make stroller use challenging. A baby carrier is strongly recommended for exploring comfortably.

  • Corniglia
Perched high on a hill, Corniglia requires climbing around 370 steps from the train station. While a shuttle is available, using a stroller remains difficult.

→ Practical Tips:

  • Getting Around:
The train is the easiest and most convenient way to travel between villages. The train stations in Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza have elevators, making access with a stroller much easier.

  • Gear:
Consider bringing a baby carrier instead of a stroller, especially for the hillier villages, this makes exploring more manageable and enjoyable. Travel light, as most villages have many stairs and uneven paths.

  • Where to Stay:
Choose accommodations close to the train stations or in flatter areas to make family travel easier and more comfortable.

| ACCESSIBILITY FOR TRAVELERS WITH REDUCED MOBILITY IN THE CINQUE TERRE

The Cinque Terre’s charm lies in its steep alleyways, narrow stairs, and cliffside villages which can pose challenges for travelers with reduced mobility. However, there are some facilities in place to help improve accessibility:

Accessible Train Stations

Most of the Cinque Terre train stations are now equipped with elevators for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.

→ Monterosso al Mare: The Most Accessible Village

Among the five villages, Monterosso al Mare is the flattest and easiest to navigate, making it the most suitable base for visitors with mobility concerns.

→ Via dell’Amore Trail

This iconic trail between Riomaggiore and Manarola has been partially restored and adapted for wheelchair access, making it one of the few accessible coastal walks in the region.

Accessible Accommodations

Many hotels and guesthouses offer adapted rooms, but it’s essential to confirm accessibility directly with each property before booking.

Note: I’m not a specialist in accessible travel, so I highly recommend contacting local tourism offices or specialized services for the most up-to-date and detailed information.

| VISITING THE CINQUE TERRE WITH YOUR DOG

I’m often asked if the Cinque Terre can be visited with a baby or a dog and the answer is yes! The Cinque Terre is a dog-friendly destination, perfect for pet lovers looking to share a scenic adventure with their four-legged companion. Here are some helpful tips for a smooth trip:

Transport: Train, Boat & Hiking with Your Dog

  • Train:
Dogs are welcome on trains connecting the Cinque Terre villages.
Small dogs travel free of charge if in a carrier.
Larger dogs must be on a leash, wear a muzzle, and have a ticket (usually 50% of the adult fare).

  • Boat:
Dogs are allowed on ferries, provided they’re leashed and muzzled. Some lines may charge a small pet supplement.

  • Hiking Trails:
Dogs on leashes are permitted on trails like the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail).
⚠️ Some sections are steep or narrow, so evaluate your dog’s stamina and agility before starting the hike.

Dog-Friendly Accommodations

Many accommodations in the Cinque Terre accept dogs, but policies vary. Always check in advance with the hotel or guesthouse when booking.

Beaches and Swimming with Your Dog

Dog access to Cinque Terre beaches is usually restricted during the day, especially from May 1st to September 30th. However, some beaches allow dogs during off-hours or outside the high season. Ask locally to find the most dog-friendly spots.

Practical Tips for a Stress-Free Trip with Your Dog

  • Documents: Make sure your dog has an up-to-date European pet passport and all required vaccinations.

  • Gear: Bring a leash, muzzle (required for public transport), waste bags, collapsible bowl, and plenty of water, especially for hikes.

  • Heat: Summers can be hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid heatstroke.

  • Respect Local Rules: Always follow local pet regulations, especially regarding transport, lodging, and public spaces.

With some planning, you can fully enjoy the beauty of the Cinque Terre with your furry friend while keeping them safe and respecting the region’s guidelines.
