Family skiing | Which resorts are best for children and adults?

There’s nothing like a mountain getaway to strengthen family bonds. Between snowball fights, first runs on the slopes, and well-deserved snacks after a day outdoors, family skiing is, above all, an adventure to share, filled with laughter and memories.

But choosing the right resort isn’t always simple. Fortunately, France is brimming with family-friendly resorts, where everything is in place to enjoy a stay that’s practical, refreshing and welcoming.

So, to help you prepare your next winter vacation, I’m sharing here my favorite resorts, the ones where young and old alike find happiness between slopes, laughter and hot chocolate on the terrace.

| Why choose a family ski resort?

Heading to the slopes with the family is a bit like stepping into a time-out bubble: you forget your routine, reconnect, and savor every moment together. But what makes the difference is choosing a resort truly adapted to families.

Here’s why it’s so valuable:

  • Facilities designed for all ages: snow gardens, kids’ clubs, wide beginner slopes, fun areas for teens.
  • A relaxed atmosphere: here there’s no stress or jostling. Family resorts focus on friendliness and safety above all.
  • Varied activities: when not everyone wants to ski, there’s always something to enjoy: snowshoe hikes, sledding, ice skating, or a simple stroll through snowy villages.
  • A warm village life: you often get around on foot, shops are nearby, and locals take the time to chat.
  • Convenient accommodations: fully equipped apartments or chalets, often just steps from the slopes; a real comfort when traveling with children.

→ My tip: look for resorts labeled Famille Plus. It’s a mark of quality, with services tailored to and attentive to children.

| My take on the best family resorts in the Alps

Ah, the Alps… These mountains we never tire of admiring! This is where the heart of French skiing beats, between large ski areas, typical villages, and breathtaking panoramas. But beyond the prestige, the Alps also host resorts perfectly suited for families, where you can enjoy the pleasures of snow stress-free, at your own pace.

  • Les Gets (Haute-Savoie)

If you’re looking for a warm and easygoing resort, Les Gets is a little gem. This Savoyard village has kept its soul, with wooden chalets, lively streets, and a friendly vibe. The ski area, part of the Portes du Soleil, offers numerous slopes for children and beginners, as well as fun zones like the Grand Cry, a themed area where the little ones learn to ski while having fun.I recommend ending the day with a hot chocolate on the Vaffieu terrace, looking out over the snowy mountains: a true family delight.

  • Les Karellis (Savoie)

Less known but beloved by families, Les Karellis is an absolute favorite. Here, there are no cars or stress: everything is pedestrian, convenient, and child-friendly.

Kids’ clubs have a great reputation, the lifts are just a stone’s throw away, and accommodations are grouped around the village center. The atmosphere is simple, warm, almost family-like—you’d think you’re in a human-scale resort where everyone knows each other.

  • La Plagne (Savoie)

With its many interconnected villages, La Plagne is a true playground for families. You’ll find slopes for all levels, activities for non-skiers, and perfectly organized logistics.

Kids love the Colorado Park (sledding track) or the Olympic bobsleigh, while parents enjoy long panoramic descents. And despite its size, La Plagne maintains a friendly atmosphere, where everything is designed to make mountain life easier.

→ Extra perk: during February school holidays, the resort often offers events: shows, workshops, giant snacks… enough to delight the whole family.

  • Serre-Chevalier (Hautes-Alpes)

With its typical villages and exceptional sunshine, Serre-Chevalier is a superb option for a family ski break. The area spans several communes, with wide pistes and fun zones for the little ones.

But what we love here is the vibe: warm, natural and sunny, reflecting the spirit of the Southern Alps. Between runs, head to the hot baths of Monêtier-les-Bains: a pure moment of relaxation, hair still frosted with snow.

  • Avoriaz 1800

Nestled in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, Avoriaz is one of the best family ski resorts in France. 100% pedestrian, it guarantees a calm and safe stay for children. Between renowned ski schools, activities for young and old, and ski-in/ski-out accommodation, Avoriaz attracts families seeking comfort and authenticity. An ideal destination for a successful family ski trip! → Read my article about the resort here

| The most beautiful ski resorts for families in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are a mountain of the heart. People come for the landscape beauty, of course, but also for the simple and warm vibe, far from the bling-bling of large Alpine resorts. It’s the perfect destination for families wanting to experience the mountains differently, at the pace of falling snow and children’s laughter.

  • Font-Romeu (Pyrénées-Orientales)

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Font-Romeu is an ideal resort for a family trip. The area is varied, the slopes are wide and well-arranged, and kids love fun areas like the “Kid Park” or the Boarder Cross for older ones.

The vibe is gentle, relaxed, almost Mediterranean; you ski, laugh, and enjoy the golden late-afternoon light.

I recommend stopping on a little restaurant terrace in the center to taste a Catalan-style tartiflette—yes, it exists, and it’s delicious!

  • Gourette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques)

Nestled in a grandiose valley, Gourette is a delightful surprise for families. It’s a human-scale resort, with a secure beginner area, progressive slopes, and a reputable ski school.

The surrounding landscapes are spectacular, and the natural setting provides a true sense of escape.

  • Peyragudes (Haute-Garonne / Hautes-Pyrénées)

Straddling two departments, Peyragudes is a modern, practical, and well-equipped resort. It appeals to families for its smooth organization: convenient parking, fast lifts, childcare and beginners’ areas.

The infrastructure is recent, the slopes well maintained, and the atmosphere remains friendly despite the size of the area.

→ My tip: try the “Skyvall”, a panoramic cable car linking Loudenvielle to the resort, a real hit with both children and parents.

  • Cauterets (Hautes-Pyrénées)

Cauterets is pure charm. This small spa village retains an old-time atmosphere while offering a modern, family-friendly ski area. Kids love the Pont d’Espagne area, perfect for first glides, while parents enjoy the view of snowy peaks.

And between runs, head to the Bains du Rocher: a wellness break in outdoor hot-water pools.

| What about family resorts in the Massif Central?

If you dream of a snowy getaway without crowds or rush, the Massif Central is a perfect destination for families. You’ll find everything you love about mountains: nature, snow, fresh air, great meals… but in a simple and soothing atmosphere, far from the hustle of large Alpine stations.

Snow-covered volcanoes, silent forests and small stone villages create a unique setting, ideal for introducing children to the mountains or simply sharing quiet moments together.

  • Le Lioran (Cantal)

Nestled in the heart of the Cantal mountains, Le Lioran is a warm, human-scale resort, perfect for families. The slopes are varied, well arranged, and beginner zones allow the youngest to make their first safe descents.

What we love here is the atmosphere: friendly, family-oriented and authentic, with inns that are perfect for warming up after a day outdoors.

→ Not to be missed: the cable car ride to Plomb du Cantal to admire the sunset over the orange-hued mountains.

  • Super-Besse (Puy-de-Dôme)

Located on the slopes of the Puy de Sancy, Super-Besse is a dynamic and accessible resort, highly appreciated by families. It offers many activities in addition to skiing: sledding, snowshoeing, giant zipline, and even an aqua-fun area to relax at the end of the day.

Kids love the wide slopes, and parents enjoy the view of snow-covered volcanoes—a spectacle that leaves no one indifferent.

Here, in the Massif Central, the mountains are experienced differently. Less crowds, more sincerity, and that little authentic touch that does you good.

| What activities can families enjoy in the mountains?

Because skiing isn’t the only way to have fun in winter, the mountains are full of activities to share as a family. Some are gentle, others a bit more sporty, but they all have one thing in common: they create memories you’ll talk about long after.

Here are some ideas not to be missed:

  • Sledding, of course! A classic that always brings laughter, regardless of age. Some resorts, like La Plagne or Font-Romeu, even have dedicated runs with conveyor belts to get back up without effort.
  • Snowshoe hikes, perfect for discovering the mountains differently. It’s peaceful, poetic, and kids love following animal tracks in the snow.
  • Dog sledding, a magical experience! Cozy under a blanket, you glide among the pines, hearing the huskies’ breath in the frosty air.
  • Ice skating, for some slides and shared laughter. Some resorts, like Les Gets or Serre-Chevalier, have superb outdoor rinks.
  • Aquatic centers: after the cold, it’s time for warmth! Heated pools, slides, jacuzzis with a view of the snow… pure joy for families.
  • Events and workshops: in winter, resorts are full of activities for kids: creative workshops, magic shows, mini discos, treasure hunts in the snow.
  • Panoramic excursions: by cable car or on foot, these moments when the whole family stops to admire the sunset over the peaks are among the best holiday memories.

→ Tip: check if your resort is labeled Famille Plus. These resorts offer activities for every age and services that make parents’ lives easier.

| My practical tips for a successful family ski trip

A family ski trip is a real joy… as long as you’re well organized! To avoid stress and make the most of every moment, here are a few simple tips that can make all the difference:

  1. Choose accommodation close to the slopes: no more endless trips back and forth with skis and mittens.
  2. Equip your kids well: a good pair of gloves, warm socks and a proper helmet, the winning trio for tear-free, warm-finger days.
  3. Book ski lessons in advance: spots fill up fast during school holidays, especially for the little ones.
  4. Plan regular breaks: a hot chocolate, a crepe, or just a moment on a café terrace facing the mountains, that’s also part of a snow holiday.
  5. Travel light if possible: most resorts rent all the equipment on site (skis, boots, sleds). Fewer bags, more serenity!
  6. Anticipate the road: chains, snow tires, snacks, games for the trip… better to plan than improvise at 2,000 meters altitude.
  7. Alternate skiing and rest: not everyone has the same pace, especially children. A morning on the slopes followed by a quiet afternoon is often the perfect combo.
  8. Get kids involved in the preparations: choosing their gloves, a sled, or the snack chocolate… it makes them proud and enthusiastic from the start.

And above all, don’t chase the perfect trip. The essential thing is to enjoy, laugh together and come home with stars in your eyes.

To conclude, a family ski trip is much more than a few days of vacation: it’s an enchanted break made up of laughter, first glides and simple moments shared in the great outdoors. So this winter, take the time to slow down, breathe pure air and create memories that will warm your hearts long after the snow has melted! Before you leave, don’t forget to read all our other skiing and winter articles here
