New York in 4 days | Discover our itinerary and gourmet addresses

Do you have a few days to spend in the Big Apple and want to feel like a real New Yorker for a moment? It’s true that when you think of New York, we immediately have the clichés that come to mind and that we inevitably want to see: the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, yellow cabs, the Empire State Building, Times Square, eating Hot Dogs and so on! But this time I had the opportunity to discover a slightly different, more local New York in 4 days, and I love it! The Big Apple, as it’s known, is in a perpetual state of flux, so new addresses are springing up fast. Before presenting our itinerary and revealing our addresses and our favorites, you need to quickly understand what New York is and how this hectic city works! That’s why I’m going to give you a few brief facts about this city of excess, this city of extremes, to help you get your bearings!

| Did you know?

  • New York is an industrial city with a very specific type of architecture that you won’t find anywhere else in the US.
  • Manhattan, also known as “Mana”, “Hatta” or the Island of Hills, is a city built in blocks, from south to north and east to west, it will help you find your way around (in the metro, for example).
  • NYC is made up of 5 boroughs, giant districts:

– To the east is the Queen and south of the Queen, the Brooklyn

– Further north, the Bronx

– To the south, Manhattan, the smallest borough geographically with a length of 22 km and a width of 7km

– All the way south: Staten Island

  • 4 out of 5 departments (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island) are on islands, only the Bronx is not!
  • Brooklyn has a population of around 2.8 million
  • The origin of the word Bronx comes from a Dutch Van Brooken family who migrated to NYC and gave the neighborhood its name!
  • Fifth Avenue or 5th avenue divides Manhattan in two parties.
  • 1 in 4 people are aged 40 or under, and 3 in 5 are single.
  • It’s one of the richest cities in the U.S. and also one of the most corrupt..
  • 4% of the population is made up of multimillionaires but NYC also has over 61,000 homeless people this year in 2017, I told you it’s a city of paradoxes!
  • New York is a city founded on inequality where the word Money (English) is their main language!
  • It’s a very large and friendly city. Here, your business is their business !” which means that if you’re lost and trying to find your way around, you’re likely to be approached by a New Yorker offering to help. Theocial interaction takes place on the street, because New Yorkers don’t have the time to sit around the table and chat like we do. They work very hard, so it’svery important for them to have this human link. So don’t be put off by their spontaneity and the help they offer!

OUR 4-DAY ITINERARY IN NYC: TIPS AND ADDRESSES BY NEIGHBORHOOD

______________________________________________________

Departure for Whitney Museum of American Art in the Meatpacking District formerly the butchers’ and abattoir district. Meat would arrive here by train (on what is now the High Line) to be detailed in this district and distributed throughout the city. Today, it’s a chic neighborhood with carefully restored industrial architecture, and a popular place to go out. Everyone is more or less sensitive to art and collections, but the terraces overlooking the Meatpacking district are unanimously appreciated! Leave the museum and follow the 2.3 km long HighLine , this old railway line and follow it up 14th Street to 30th Street. Take the time to stop and rest on one of the many benches. Many New York families and celebrities come here to stroll as soon as the sun comes out. The High Line would be the world’s longest green roof, and would enable the regeneration of nature in New York. Not only is it environmentally friendly, it’s also a popular lunch spot! For me, it’s a big favorite!

If you too want to discover this district in a different way, check out the guided tour of Meatpacking.

➡️ Check here for availability and book in advance.

At the end of the Highline, in the wooded park Public Square and Gardens at Hudson Yard, is the new architecture of NYC, the Vessel also known as New York’s Staircase. Unmistakable for its oval shape, coppery color and 154 staircases connected to each other by platforms, this new project, work of art or monument has disappointed a good number of New Yorkers who were expecting to see a more authentic project with old-fashioned staircases… a failure! You’ll need a free ticket to enter. Remember to book tickets online, as there are also a limited number of tickets available for sale on site.

We continue the tour on foot to Pen Station on the 34th street in front of the poste centrale and the Madison Square Garden, famous for its concerts and basketball games. Then direction Bedford Avenue. A former El Dorado for artists fleeing Manhattan, this former industrial district is the heart of the bobo / hipster movement.

  • WILLIAMSBURG

Lunch at Smorgasburg on the East River State Park plaza overlooking the New York skyline (the skyline is the view of the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan). This market is absolutely brilliant for its multicultural atmosphere, its many food stalls from all over the world and its breathtaking view of the skyline. There’s something for every taste and budget (veggie, Mexican, grilled meats…) It’s crowded but magical. Saturdays in Williamsburg and Sundays in Prospect Park. Then take a stroll through the Williamsburg to the rhythm of coffeeshops and trendy gourmet boutiques (Mast Brothers, Blue Bottle Coffee, Sweatshop, etc. addresses listed below). Meet late afternoon at One World Observatory in the Financial District, atop the new World Trade Center tower, 540 meters of glass and steel. The sunset was insane and this 360-degree view is superb and different from what you’ve already seen at Top of the Rock or the Empire State building. A must-do!

If you too want to discover this neighborhood in a different way, check out the guided tour of Brooklyn.

➡️ Check here for availability and book in advance.

Back to the Brooklyn (between Williamsburg and Bushwick) for dinner at El Cortez: very good Mexican food, the setting is a little noisy but the beer was good and the burritos hearty to say the least. The ideal place to end the day with a good beer! You can also choose to dine at one of Brooklyn’s hottest spots, Dover Restaurant, a gourmet bistro that everyone in NYC is talking about.

The districts of Meatpacking and Williamsburg Very vogue and dynamic neighborhoods. It’s a real coup de coeur, because I love these hipster places where you take the time to relax on terraces, benches and coffee shops. The atmosphere is cool, family-friendly, trendy and vintage, with some pretty cool boutiques and art galleries! If you’re a Sex and the City fan, you’re bound to have seen images of the Meatpacking.

SOUTH WILLIAMSBURG/BROOKLYN HEIGHTS

The Well (272 Meserole St Brooklyn)
  • Entrée One World Observatory: Adultes $34, Seniors $32, Enfants $28.

| DAY 2: SUNDAY – GOSPEL, BRUNCH, AND TIMES SQUARE

Enjoy the sounds of gospel and jazz in the Bronx, a multi-ethnic microcosm, then discover Times Square by day and by night!

  • GOSPEL AND BRUNCH

Sunday is church day in Harlem! Take the subway to Times Square, then walk to Midtown for the Harlem Spirituals meeting point (on the street perpendicular to Times Square) and the start of the “Harlem Gospel ” guided bus tour.

Who would have thought that after years of darkness, this ever-evolving neighborhood would become trendy! I’m not necessarily a fan of guided tours, but I have to admit, theHarlem Gospel bus tour is really great, especially if you do it with Dwen, an outstanding, passionate, funny, and interesting guide! He will help you discover this neighborhood like no one else has ever done before.

There are several bus stops along the route, including City College, New York’s Hogwarts, and the Apollo Theater, a legendary venue that was a rite of passage for a whole generation of artists, before heading to the Bronx to attend a gospel service at the Friendly Baptist Church. There are many churches in the Bronx and Harlem where you can attend gospel services, but the one I went to was particularly authentic (even though there were many tourists present). We were in a neighborhood that has one of the poorest communities in the Bronx, but the welcome was so warm! I would have liked to film or take some photos, but it’s not allowed! In this church, people sing, dance, laugh, and cry! Gospel is at the root of all musical forms such as soul and funk, so it’s an unmissable event during your stay in New York! After these emotionally charged moments, it’s time for lunch and to discover the Gospel brunch at the Cotton Club. Here, you can listen to jazz sung by an energetic diva who bears a striking resemblance to Tina Turner and enjoy cornbread, fried chicken, and family-style broccoli in a legendary club. I loved tasting these local specialties at the Cotton Club and listening to the vocal and musical performances of the singer and jazz band. I didn’t like the place as much because it was quite dark inside (for a brunch in the middle of the day). I would have preferred it to be located in a small, more typical or atypical bar.

If you also want to discover this neighborhood in a different way, check out the guided tour of Harlem that I offer.

➡️ Check the availability of this tour here and book in advance.

COUP DE ♥

For my fourth time in NYC, I went to church Gospel Soul Saving Station (302 West, 124th street). I loved their welcome, the atmosphere of the mass, the people and the fact that there were very, very few tourists – 4 to give you an idea! A beautiful, authentic place full of charm. Not far from here, I’ll meet you at Londel’s for an American-style brunch in a city institution: Bill Clinton, Obama, Aretha Francklin and many others came to taste this succulent cuisine! You’ll eat cornbread, cinnamon-roasted apples, coleslow, potatoes, ribs… in short, nothing but good food, and it’s the owner who keeps on cooking and serving you! ( 2620 Fredrick Douglas Blvd)

  • TIMES SQUARE, FLAT IRON BUILDING AND ROOFTOP

You’ll return to Times Square around 2 p.m., giving you time to enjoy this legendary place, marvelling at all the illuminated billboards and, of course, the famous Naked Cowboy. Times Square is a must-see stop on your tour that will leave a lasting impression, day or night! We continued our stroll through Midtown to the Flatiron Building, you know, the building shaped like an iron, then took a well-deserved coffee break in a very pleasant setting! When evening came, we wanted to try our first rooftop bar, so we went to cool off on the roof of a youth hostel and then had dinner at a unique Indian restaurant.

  • I tested the New York Times Square Hôtel of the Novotel chain, located at 226W and 52 nd street, a maximum 10-minute walk from Times Square. It’s very well located because it’s central. Their room is spacious, ask for the view overlooking Times Square and their breakfast is very hearty. It’s really just a short walk from the Broadway theater district, Central Park, Rockfeller Center, shopping and must-see tourist attractions. We recommend it!
  • You can also stay at the City Rooms NYC Hotel on Times Square, a more intimate and less expensive hotel than the Novotel. Expect to pay around a hundred dollars a night in low season.

TIMES SQUARE

  • The restaurant Bill’s Bar Burger on 16 West and 51 Street, open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., offering burgers, including one for which it is famous: The impossible burger for vegetarians. It’s in such high demand that they can’t produce enough of it! It is a 10-minute walk from New York Times Square Novotel
  • The Virgil’s Real barbebcue (152 W 44th St) just a stone’s throw from Times Square to enjoy Texas cuisine in this huge brasserie! We try their Ribs, Onion Rings and their cornbread and mashed potatoes drizzled with mushroom sauce (it’s too good).
  • At the restaurant Buca Di Beppo (1540 Broadway), an Italian restaurant located in an apartment building, with a rather kitsch decor that serves everything from rigatoni gratin to lemon chicken and cheesecake…
  • Coffee break at Birch coffee right next to the Flat Iron Building
  • Breakfast at Penelope (159 Lexington Ave)
  • Rooftop from Pod 39 for a beautiful view of the city

  • Take advantage of your stay in New York to see a musical comedy, it’s a Broadway staple. You’ll find headliners like The Lion King, which has been playing since 1997, as well as Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. I went to see Chicago this time and I loved it! The show lasts 2h30 in English, including an intermission. If you don’t understand English, try to find the story behind this musical on the Internet, as the songs and choreography are well worth the effort! You can either buy your tickets in advance on the internet, or at a discount venue:

-> queue up for the Rush Tickets

-> go to TKTS and benefit from discounts of up to 50%.

| JOUR 3: LUNDI – BUSHWICK, TOP OF THE ROCK, DUMBO AND CENTRAL PARK

Try your hand at street art in the Buswick district, enjoy the city’s many panoramic views at Top of the Rock and take a refreshing break in Central Park.

  • BUSHWICK

Direction Bushwick, the mecca of street art, one of my favorite New York neighborhoods to join Elise Goujon and start her tour with New York off road. Discover the open-air street art museum of Bushwick, Brooklyn’s rapidly changing neighborhood. Don’t hesitate to book this tour, as Elise is passionate about the city and will take you to unusual places, the New York of New Yorkers, and takes you away from the tourist spots. What’s more, for just a moment you too can take up Street Art. Test theAtelier graph with Elise and Theresa to bring back or offer an original gift. This visit is a rather interesting life experience that I highly recommend.

If you too want to discover this neighborhood in a different way, check out the guided tour of Bushwick.

➡️ Check here for availability and book in advance.

That’s not all, but visits are tiring, so let’s take a break for a tasting at Dun-Well Doughnuts, reputed to be the best doughnuts in town then lunch at Roberta’s considered THE best pizza in New York, to be enjoyed outside, between two walls of street art. I must confide in you…, they are very, very good!

Please note that Roberta’s is a very busy place where you can’t make reservations. So either you’re lucky, or you’re patient and can wait at least 2 hours for a table, or you do as we did and go for lunch!

  • CENTRAL PARK, TOP OF THE ROCK AND SUNSET ON DUMBO

After this hearty lunch, we wanted to cycle to Midtown to get the Top of the Rock tickets (to go up in the late afternoon, early evening) but we decided to go by subway as the cost was too high for 30 minutes of pedaling! If Top of The rock is part of your program, remember to choose a day and time on their website and then pick up your tickets on site as tickets go very fast! The area is limited to a certain number of people each day, with specific time slots. Please don’t tear up the tickets on your activity pass until you’ve been asked to do so, or you’ll be refused access. Read the conditions on the 1st page! In the meantime sunset, return to Brooklyn to explore Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. This location is perfect for photos of the bridge from the cobblestone street, not forgetting a stop at Jean Nouvel’s carousel, overlooking the Skyline! At nightfall, since you’re next door, you can return to visit Times square by night this time and dine on Lebanese food at a New York institution in Greenwich village.

If you too want to discover this district in a different way, check out the guided tour of Greenwich.

➡️ Check here for availability and book in advance.

| FAVORITE ACTIVITIES

Treat yourself to a relaxing break in one of the world’s most famous parks: Central Park. Discover this huge park in a different way:

BROOKLYN

  • I tested the hotel Even Hotel from Brooklyn (), a small, reasonably-priced hotel in a good location. The breakfast is very healthy and the room rather nice!
  • A friend of mine tested the hotel the 1 Brooklyn Bridge (60 Furman Street) and what can I tell you? I think this is one of the most beautiful hotels she’s ever stayed in! The panoramic view of the skyline is breathtaking! A good budget is required, but it’s a great experience!
  • And don’t forget the magnificent hotel Peninsula New York perhaps for a different night, a stone’s throw from Central Park.

CENTRAL PARK

  • Breakfast at Neil’s Coffee shop
  • Not far from Central Park is the Japanese restaurant Benihana (47W et 56th St)
  • Do you love cookies? It seems that Levain Bakery (74 street) is the place to go for the most enormous, lukewarm cookies ever! If you thought kouign amann was heavy and greasy, then you’ve seen nothing with this totally buttery address!

GREENWICH VILLAGE

  • Dine in a small park with plates and sandwiches from Mamoun’s Falafels

CENTRAL PARK

  • Visit the rooftops of Chuck Bass’ hotel in Gossip Girl at Empire Hotel (44 W 63rd St) or on The Attic Rooftop and Lounge (251 W 48th St) which offers a beautiful view of New York

DUMBO

  • Near Dumbo, head for the Jacques Torres (), reputed to be the best in town! I’ve tasted them and they’re very tasty and, above all, very big!
  • For a good home-made ice cream, head for Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (), not far from Brookyn Bridge

GREENWICH VILLAGE

  • cocktail bar at Cubby Hole

BUSHWICK

  • Coffee break in a quirky, industrial neighborhood spot City of Saints Coffee (297 Meserole Street)

  • For fans of Whisky bourbon, we tested the distillery Kings County Distillery () east of Dumbo. The place is very pretty, all brick and industrial, and the whisky is pretty good. It’s a rather original visit, as they produce everything on site and export to several European countries. The tour costs $16/p with tasting, and the most expensive bottle of whisky costs €50.

| JOUR 4 : MARDI – FINANCIAL DISTRICT, TRIBECA AND GREENWICH VILLAGE

Take a stroll around Tribeca, Soho and Greenwich Village.

  • FINANCIAL DISTRICT

Discovering the Financial District. As the end of the day approaches, it’s time to head to the Financial District, nicknamed “FIDI”, an increasingly up-and-coming and trendy neighbourhood. With its glass towers and unique atmosphere, it’s New York’s new must-see destination. This is where you’ll find the famous “Wall Street Bull” statue, which is always crowded with tourists (get there early if you want to take a photo). It’s located in Bowling Green Park, at the end of Broadway, not far from Battery Park. If you want to experience the real atmosphere of New York’s business district, come to the Wall Street stock exchange on a weekday morning when the traders are at work. This is also an opportunity to visit the World Trade Center site and its museum, the Oculus (the shopping centre, station and masterpiece by Santiago Calatrava, which represents hope with its sculpture of a dove taking flight). Take the time to stroll through the colourful neighbourhoods of Tribeca and Greenwich Village. When lunchtime approaches, grab a bagel to go and have a picnic in Central Park, for example! Free time for shopping on 5th Avenue, for example, or at Urban Outfitters, one of my favourite shops! At the end of the afternoon, head to the Brooklyn Bridge and walk across it to the other side (allow a good hour). The lights on the Brooklyn Bridge are beautiful at the end of the day with the sunset! It’s time to say goodbye to New York and head to JFK Airport. Return to Paris CDG on the night flight.

  • BROOKLYN BRIDGE

  • GREENWICH VILLAGE

Head to the corner of W 4th Street and Perry Street. Here, you can stroll through the narrow streets, taste the same cupcakes as those in Sex & the City and take pretty photos of the facades, art galleries and record shops… life is good in Greenwich Village!

  • TRIBECA

Tribeca is a trendy neighbourhood in Lower Manhattan, known for its old industrial buildings, many of which have been converted into residential lofts. The cobbled streets are lined with restaurants and shops, and above these shop fronts, you’ll find colourful façades and staircases everywhere. For me, along with Greenwich, this is the neighbourhood you see most often in TV series such as Friends and Sex & the City… I love walking around there! As the neighbourhood is quite photogenic, why not immortalise the moment by organising a couple or family photo shoot?

Check out the photo shoot I offer.

  • SOHO AND SHOPPING

This is the shopping district with stores such as the only official Converse shop, Adidas, Nike, Victoria’s Secret, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and many, many other brands. Everything is concentrated on Broadway Avenue or on the streets perpendicular to Canal Street and Bleecker Street. Get off at Prince Street underground station to be right in the centre.

If you are looking for specific Converse models, you will only find them in the official Soho store. Shops like Footlocker mainly sell Converse in basic colours (black, white, red, beige, etc.) for £50, which is a good deal.

The Levis store in Times Square offers discounts of up to 30%. Please note that you do not pay tax on clothing and shoes when the bill does not exceed £110. Above this amount, you will be charged 8% tax.

Note: all these stores can also be found on 5th Avenue, so it’s up to you to be strategic and make the most of your days as you see fit.

  • A FOOD TOUR IN EAST VILLAGE

Next to Greenwich Village, you can take a food tour. The food tour is organised by a local and allows you to discover places, trendy bars and must-visit addresses to taste the city’s specialities. You might not even have thought of it, but in just a few hours, you’ll awaken all your senses!

Discover the food tour I recommend by clicking on this link.

  • In the Financial District, we recommend the hotel Q&A Residential as you get the feeling of being in a mini New York loft (without the bricks). These (slightly expensive) fully-equipped apartments are located in the heart of the Financial District. You can buy local produce at the supermarket and make your own homemade, healthy breakfast.

GREENWICH VILLAGE

  • Murray’s Bagels

  • Magnolia Bakery (401 Bleecker St) A buttercream lover’s paradise, made cult by the TV series Sex & the City (where Carrie and Miranda are seen enjoying cupcakes). As the boutique closes late, you can visit even after dinner for the evening’s sweetness? The windows aren’t very clean, but the store is cute with its glass window that lets you see the bakers preparing the cupcakes.
  • If you’re in the mood for a Vietnamese restaurant, head for Saigon Shack. The setting is average, but for $8 the addresses are copious and tasty. Take out and eat on the banks of the Hudson in Washington Park.

SOHO/LOWER MANHATTAN

  • Cheese cake from Eileen’s Special Cheesecake (17 Cleveland Pl) apparently renowned.
  • If you’re a fan of cupcakes, go to Little Cupcake Bakeshop (less tail than Magnolia Bakery). Their cupcakes and ice creams are apparently very good, like the chocolate brownie marble ice cream, which I’ve been told is a killer!
  • Try our brunch Locanda Verde ( 377 Greenwich) for its setting and food.

EAST VILLAGE

  • In the East Village, I invite you to the Yaffa café (97 St Marks Pl) for a taste of veggie cuisine, with great crabcakes and salads.
  • Resto Indian Panna II garden in the East village. It’s totally kitsch but so original. The ceiling is entirely covered with garlands of lights and Indian pendants. Good plan, it’s a BYOB (bring your own bottle), so all you have to do is buy a beer or other at the store downstairs and bring it with you to the restaurant.

SOHO/LOWER MANHATTAN

  • Not far from the famous cheese cake is the Yerba Buena, a rather generous cocktail bar with drinks costing around $12 or $7 during happy hour on Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm.
  • The barbossa (232 Elizabeth St) is a small Brazilian restaurant known for its cocktails, good food and entertainment.
  • For an exceptional setting, join us on a boat at the Pier 66 (), one of the best places to watch the sun set over the Hudson. Apparently their sangria and chicken wraps aren’t bad at all, but the food in general isn’t exceptional.

GREENWICH

  • Drink a glass of French wine with a platter of charcuterie at The Bourgeois Pig
  • Enjoy a coffee at Astor café (79 east, 10th street)

If you have time to spare, you can visit the museum. The visit is poignant because you will find personal effects found in the rubble (shoes, wallet…) but also photos of people killed during the attack, firefighters who risked their lives…

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum:

  • Access to the Memorial is free of charge. On the other hand, the museum and there are long queues. (Here are the prices:
  • 26 for adults
  • $20 for seniors
