How to Visit the Agriates Desert in Corsica (Full Guide)

How to Visit the Agriates Desert in Corsica (Full Guide)

Are you spending your holidays on the Island of Beauty, in Northern Corsica, and looking to explore the Agriates Desert in just one day? Discover all the unforgettable experiences that await you in this heavenly corner of Corsica.

| Why Visit the Agriates Desert in Corsica?

Corsica is a wild and rugged Mediterranean island that continues to captivate travelers. Visitors are drawn here for its dreamy beaches and hidden coves, sunny climate, mountainous terrain, mouthwatering cuisine, and so much more. It’s the kind of place you never get tired of exploring!

Among its many natural wonders lies a remote and untamed region we discovered during a summer trip: the Agriates Desert, located just south of Cap Corse. This unique and almost uninhabitable area had long been on our bucket list and it did not disappoint.

If you’re dreaming of unspoiled landscapes and breathtaking views, the Agriates Desert, located in northwestern Corsica between Cap Corse and the Balagne region, offers a timeless escape into nature. Despite the name, there are no sand dunes here instead, you’ll find dense maquis shrubland, surrounding mountains, turquoise coves, and secret beaches only accessible on foot or by boat. A true hidden gem, still preserved and far from the crowds.

| The History of the Agriates Desert: Between Farmlands and Corsican Legends

For centuries, the Agriates served as Corsica’s breadbasket. Far from being a barren wasteland, this fertile region was once widely cultivated, producing grains, vineyards, olive groves, and pastureland for livestock. After World War I, agricultural activity declined and the land gradually returned to its wild state.

Interestingly, the name “Agriates” comes from the Latin word ager, meaning “cultivated field.” Today, the area is a fascinating blend of agricultural history, pastoral traditions, and nature reclaiming its space.

| Where Is the Agriates Desert? | Map, Climate, and Spectacular Landscapes

Covering nearly 15,000 hectares, the Agriates Desert is bordered:

  • To the south by the Serra di Tenda mountain range and the D81 road

  • To the north by the Mediterranean Sea

  • To the west by the Balagne region

  • To the east by the Nebbio region

Its terrain features a mix of rugged mountains, dense shrubland (maquis), hidden beaches, and natural springs.

The climate is typically Mediterranean, with very hot summers and occasionally strong winds like the Libecciu. The local vegetation is perfectly adapted to these dry conditions. The striking contrast between the arid inland and the gentle coastline gives the Agriates its truly unique character.

Once a land of agriculture and livestock, the Agriates have since become a haven of wild beauty boasting untouched nature, abundant wildlife, and dramatic scenery, including 35 km of coastline dotted with paradisiacal beaches.

| Nature in the Agriates Desert: Wildlife, Flora & Protected Areas

The Agriates Desert is a protected natural sanctuary, managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral and listed under the Natura 2000 network. The area is home to typical Mediterranean vegetation such as strawberry trees, cistus, junipers, mastic trees, and myrtle.

Wildlife is just as rich: you may spot wild boars, Hermann’s tortoises (a protected species), buzzards, kestrels, and even the occasional fox.

Despite the desert like feel, several wetlands, ponds, and streams dot the landscape, providing essential habitats for many species. To help preserve this fragile ecosystem, access is restricted on certain trails.

| Top 5 Most Beautiful Beaches in the Agriates Desert

Exploring the Agriates means discovering an ecological treasure and some of Northern Corsica’s most stunning beaches. Here are our top picks:

  1. Saleccia Beach
A breathtaking stretch of white sand, fringed by umbrella pines and crystal clear waters. Often referred to as paradise, this is the most famous and also one of the most remote beaches in Corsica.

  2. Lotu Beach
Accessible by boat or via the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Path), this beach combines a peaceful lagoon, fine sand, and lush maquis vegetation.

  3. Ghignu Beach
Much quieter and off the beaten track perfect for adventurers seeking solitude in a pristine setting.

  4. Malfalcu Cove
A small, intimate cove tucked away in the northern part of the desert, accessible only on foot.

  5. Ostriconi Beach
Found at the western edge of the desert, this wild beach offers a unique backdrop of sand dunes and a lush valley.

  • Saleccia Beach

Often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Corsica, Saleccia Beach is a dreamlike spot with white sand stretching over a kilometer, surrounded by juniper dunes, an Aleppo pine forest, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is also the largest and most popular of the Agriates beaches, especially during the high season. One of its most charming quirks? Cows often nap on the warm sand, adding a surreal and peaceful touch to the landscape.

→ How to Get There

Getting to Saleccia on foot can be a bit of a challenge. Expect a 45-minute to 1-hour walk one way. While the walk is scenic and rewarding, it may be difficult for some especially if you’re traveling with young children.

⚠️ Please note: There are no sunbeds, no parasols, and no toilet facilities available on Saleccia Beach.

→ Where to Eat: Refreshments & Local Dining Options

To cool off or grab a bite, you’ll find a small wooden beach hut, A Piniccia di Saleccia, tucked under the pine trees just five minutes from the beach. It serves traditional Corsican cuisine in the shade of the Aleppo pines ideal for a relaxed lunch close to nature.

Alternatively, pack a picnic and plenty of water for the day, especially if you’re planning to stay a while.

We also discovered a hidden gem we would have loved to try La Cabane du Lodu. Located 30 minutes on foot from Saleccia and just 6 minutes from Lotu Beach, this cozy beach hut serves up grilled meats, fresh salads, and homemade desserts on a shaded terrace right by the sea.
Address: Sentier du littoral, 20246 Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda

Important: Advance booking is essential if you want to enjoy lunch here it’s a coveted spot that fills up quickly, especially at midday.

  • Lotu Beach

Lotu Beach pronounced Lodo in Corsican is a small, unspoiled beach that has preserved all its wild charm. Don’t be surprised if you spot a few cows roaming nearby, adding to the tranquil, natural atmosphere.

Surrounded by rock formations and maquis scrubland, this 400-meter stretch of soft white sand borders incredibly clear turquoise waters, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling.

→ How to Get There

The beach is only accessible by sea. The easiest way is by boat: it’s about a 20-minute crossing from Saint-Florent.

For more adventurous souls or experienced hikers, it’s also possible to reach Lotu on foot via the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Path), starting from Saint-Florent. However, be aware this is a challenging 3- to 4-hour hike under the Corsican sun, with little to no shade.

⚠️ There are no tourist facilities on Lotu Beach. A small beach bar/restaurant can be found about 5 minutes’ walk to the left of the beach, offering a refreshing stop in this otherwise remote setting.

| Walking from Lotu Beach to Saleccia Beach

You can easily hike between Lotu and Saleccia beaches by choosing one of two scenic trails:

→ Via the inland trail (approx. 45 minutes)

Turn left after leaving the Lotu pier. This route offers panoramic views of both beaches and showcases the surprising diversity of the Agriates landscape: mountains, ponds, olive trees, and the occasional bit of shade. The arrival at Saleccia Beach is absolutely magical!

Note: this path is also used by 4×4 vehicles on organized tours, so expect some dust and engine noise along the way.

→ Via the coastal trail (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes)

For a more pleasant and quieter walk, turn right when exiting the Lotu pier. The coastal trail lets you swim in stunning, easily accessible coves and relax in the shade of the pines along the way, before reaching Saleccia Beach.

Important Tips, Don’t forget to bring:

  • A hat

  • A small backpack

  • Sunscreen

  • Snacks

  • Plenty of water : the sun can be intense, and there’s no water source along the way!

| How to Get to the Agriates Desert: Boat, 4×4, Hiking or Coastal Trail?

There are several ways to explore the Agriates Desert: on foot, by 4×4, by bike, or by boat. But what’s the best option for a one-day trip?

For our part, we didn’t want to hike under the scorching sun or expose ourselves to the intense midday heat. We also weren’t keen on motorized vehicles, as we were looking for peace and quiet and we’d heard that the 4×4 ride is quite bumpy and long. We also wanted to avoid mass tourism excursions with fixed schedules. That’s why we chose a boat trip, which gave us the freedom to sail at our own pace and swim in crystal-clear waters.

With hindsight, I’ll share some tips on how to make the most of your visit because while the Agriates is a dream destination, it can get very crowded in high season.

  • By Boat :From Saint-Florent, regular boat shuttles take you to Lotu and Saleccia beaches in 20–30 minutes.
  • By 4×4 : A 12 km off-road track connects Casta to Saleccia Beach. Several companies offer guided trips in all-terrain vehicles.
  • On Foot: Take the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Path): From Lotu to Saleccia, it’s a 1.5-hour hike The full coastal trail spans the entire. Agriates coast and takes 2 to 3 days to complete, with bivouac options available.
  • By Mountain Bike: Adventurous cyclists can take on the rocky trails, suitable for robust MTB bikes and experienced riders.
